The Fundamental Difference

Termites eat wood. They digest cellulose, and the wood they consume is gone. Carpenter ants do not eat wood at all — they excavate it, chewing through to hollow out smooth galleries for nesting and pushing the debris out. They feed on other things entirely: sweets, proteins, and insects.

That difference drives everything else. Termite damage is generally faster and more severe. Carpenter ant damage is slower but still structurally significant over time, and it points to a moisture problem you probably do not know about.

Telling the Insects Apart

If you have a specimen — and a phone camera zoom is enough — three features settle it:

  • Waist. Ants have a sharply pinched, narrow waist between thorax and abdomen. Termites have a broad, straight-sided body with no pinch at all — they look like a single uniform tube.
  • Antennae. Ant antennae are clearly elbowed, bending at a joint. Termite antennae are straight and often described as beaded.
  • Wings (on swarmers). Ants have two pairs of unequal wings — the forewings are noticeably longer than the hindwings. Termites have two pairs of equal-length wings, both much longer than the body. Termite wings also shed easily, so piles of identical discarded wings on windowsills are a classic termite sign.

Color helps as a secondary check. Carpenter ants are usually black or black with reddish coloring and are large, commonly a quarter to a half inch. Termite workers are pale, soft-bodied, and creamy white; termite swarmers are darker but still lack the pinched waist.

Telling the Damage Apart

You will often find evidence before you ever find an insect, and the evidence is quite distinct:

  • Carpenter ant galleries are smooth, clean, and almost sanded-looking inside, with no mud or debris packed into them.
  • Termite galleries are rough and packed with mud, soil, and fecal material. If you open damaged wood and find dirt inside, think termites.
  • Carpenter ants leave frass — a sawdust-like pile of wood shavings mixed with insect parts — beneath small openings in the wood. This is the single most reliable carpenter ant sign and is regularly mistaken for ordinary sawdust.
  • Termites leave mud tubes: pencil-width earthen tunnels running up foundation walls, piers, and crawl space surfaces, which they build to travel between soil and wood while staying protected.
  • Termites often leave the wood surface intact while hollowing it from within, so damage appears suddenly as blistered paint, sagging, or a floor that gives underfoot.

Where Each One Nests

Carpenter ants strongly prefer wood softened by moisture. Why Getting It Wrong Is Expensive

Treating termites as carpenter ants means the wrong products in the wrong places while a colony consumes structural wood. Treating carpenter ants as termites means an expensive soil treatment that does nothing about a colony nesting in a wet window frame — and leaves the moisture source that caused it entirely unaddressed.

Both also share a failure mode: surface spraying. Killing the foragers or swarmers you can see removes the visible evidence while the colony continues working out of sight, which is exactly how a problem quietly progresses for another season or two.

What to Do

Collect a specimen or take a clear photo before treating anything. Check for mud tubes on foundation walls and in the crawl space, and look for frass beneath wood surfaces, window frames, and baseboards. Tap suspect wood and listen for hollowness. If you find shed wings on windowsills, save some.
